Contemporary rug art by the talented Abolfazi Shahi.
Trained as a calligrapher, Abolfazi Shai has turned to creating carpets. While words are ever present in Persian culture – texts rendered in beautiful calligraphy adorn the mosques & public spaces – it is not common to find them on carpets, as it would be disrespectful for texts to be walked upon. Indeed, it is the intention of the artist for these carpets not to be walked on. Shai, however, uses these carpets as a showcase for texts from popular songs that the women weavers sing while working making a playful statement about popular songs and modern life.
